This weekend Disney+ launches its new science fiction/adventure film Artemis Fowl at Disney+, bypassing the usual cinema format. It was clear that Disney would get its own franchise from Harry Potter, but according to Variety, Artemis Fowl should be Harry Potter Disney. Instead it comes 20 years later, a very late addition to an already popular genre that only adds noise, a brilliant KGI and a more confused mythology of supposedly real civilizations of magical people … living among us.
THR argues that Artemis Fowl’s film could succeed in reducing rather than increasing the franchise’s popularity (£25 million sold worldwide): This long-awaited adaptation, shot with Kenneth Bran’s inappropriate daredevilry trophy, has enough plot for four or five films, none of which will slip your mind. The idea of showing YA’s popular franchise – more than 25 million copies sold worldwide – is to increase, not decrease, the fan base.
According to Collider, Artemis Fowle, even though you are already subscribed to Disney+, is still not worth seeing in time: I can’t imagine anyone likes this movie. It’s very different from the book it’s based on. Artemis Fowl strives to tell an interesting story. Of course you can check it out at Disney+, but you can also find countless other ways to make better use of the 95 minutes of your time.
Crazy elements such as the way Artemis Fowl changes the character of the title and above all makes him a villain who deserves to be cared for: Fans, take it easy knowing that this may not be what you know, but there’s no doubt that Artemis is another kind of villain to get rooted in.
