State pollution control board asks waterjet unit owners to install environment management system to curb water pollution.

Surat : In what is seen as a big relief to the powerloom weaving sector in the city, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has provided partial relief to the owners of the waterjet weaving units, whose renewal under the Consolidated Consent and Authorization (CCA) are pending.

GPCB has made it clear that the unit owners will be given three months of relief from obtaining or renewing the CCA certification starting from July 14 . After three months are over, the unit owners will have to install the required Environment Management System (EMS) suggested by the experts of the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT).

It must be noted that the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) and the SVNIT have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for designing the multiple effective evaporator system to curb water pollution in the waterjet units.

What is CCA.

Every industrial unit, after installation of required Environment Management System (EMS) and on starting production activities, immediately shall apply for Consolidated Consent and Authorization (CCA) under the provisions of the Water Act, the Air Act and the Hazardous Waste Rules.

The GPCB has asked the SVNIT and the SGCCI for developing adequate evaporation system within three months. CETP member units will be approved on merit basis, closed units will be allowed to install the EMS system etc.

Dinesh Navadia, president of SGCCI told, “The technology developed by the SVNIT for EMS will be assessed by a committee of the chamber and that the final technology will be rolled out for the waterjet units after three months”
